About the Metro

As we are analysing the Metro, we thought it would be a good idea to look into the background of the Metro. When researching the Metro we found out that it was first published in March 1999 as a free newspaper. When it was first launched it was only availiable in London but it is now availiable in Britain's 16 major cities. It is estimated that on avaerage 1.3 million copies are distributed across the UK every weekday morning, making the Metro the world's largest free newspaper and the fourth biggest in the UK.
The Metro consists of national and local news articles, which are simple and easy for the reader to read.
The Metro also has their own online website so that readers can access news articles 24/7

  1. You really need to analyse and deconstruct a front page/page 2 of a selection of newspapers.
    1)
You must focus in on the key conventions in terms of layout. What do they all do in common?
    2)
What is the tone of the articles? Do they attempt to 'whip up' the reader emotionally? If so, in what way?
    3)
How will your project be compromised in terms of 'whipping up' the audience emotionally? Being associated with a shopping centre may mean you will have to avoid certain types of story. Does this mean your newspaper will seek to avoid covering controversial stories? Will that harm your potential impact?
    5)
Your core target audience are more than just 'shoppers.' How will you seek to 'tune in' to their concerns and champion their causes? (The Daily Mail have done well in this area. Read it, analyse it in terms of how The Daily Mail connects to its audience. What can you learn from this newspaper's strategy?
